Recently we were made aware of a potential DNS traffic leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android. Even with Android OS “Always-on VPN” and “Block connections without VPN” options enabled, as per the report the plaintext DNS traffic can be observed outside the VPN tunnel.

Context TunnelCrack is the combination of two independent security vulnerabilities (LocalNet attack and ServerIP attack) that affect VPN applications. The research paper detailing these vulnerabilities was published and presented on 11 August 2023. IVPN apps were not tested by the researchers, and unlike other providers, we did not receive a vulnerability disclosure.

Quantum computing poses a threat to VPN security due to its potential to break traditional encryption algorithms much faster. In an attempt to mitigate this risk and provide quantum resistance, a PresharedKey (PSK) is now used in addition to existing encryption.
